What is SunShine?

    SunShine is a utility that allows you to s-off and bootloader unlock modern HTC & Motorola devices, giving you more freedom than any developer phone would allow. SunShine is a paid application. Please continue reading to understand our reasonings behind this move.

     As the men and women at Google, Qualcomm, and various OEMs do a wonderful job of maturing Android; the security of these devices are advancing by leaps and bounds. Make no mistake, a secure device is good for the average consumer, but we know you are not the average consumer. You want more power. Often, root access alone is not enough to fully own your device. For example, on current HTC devices just gaining root does not allow you to flash a custom recovery, a new kernel or even modify system. Even using HTC's own boot loader unlock, many aspects of the device are still locked down. SunShine is the start of a new era.


What makes SunShine the start of a new era?

    Simply put, it isn't free. SunShine is the cumulation of years of research, hundreds of hours of development, the sacrifice of many devices (R.I.P. bricked test phones), and the blood, sweat and tears of multiple developers. Just like how a mechanic charges money for his time souping up your car, the only feasible way to devote the time and energy to this is to charge for it. The income from SunShine allows us to recoup the time lost from other projects, to invest more time into research and development of new solutions, purchase new test hardware, and to allow us to enjoy a few bottles of wine at the end of a hard week.


Well crud, how much are you asking for?

    The initial price of SunShine is set at $25.00usd per device, payable via paypal or credit-card from within the application itself. Our hopes are that SunShine is successful enough to allow us to find or purchase vulnerabilities, and to develop future solutions at lower prices. Are you crazy $25?!?

    You may be right. We may be crazy. Considering our costs to develop SunShine, we feel we are justified. Most of our customers purchased heavily subsidized devices, instead of opting for a more developer friendly product. SunShine solves that situation, at a much lower cost than purchasing a developer device.


How many devices can I s-off with one license?

    Your license is linked to the device you purchased SunShine on. While we never recommend going s-on, should you choose to do so, you will be able to use SunShine again assuming it has not been patched, with no additional costs. You will need to purchase additional licenses to use SunShine on additional devices.


Does it work on whelp devices?

    Yes, it works on devices that our previous exploits (firewater and weaksauce respectfully) either never functioned on, or no longer function on.


Who the heck is behind this nonsense?

    Justin Case (jcase/TeamAndIRC), beaups and others unnamed. We come with years of experience, and combined have easily published more public Android vulnerabilities than any other group of people. We like to pretend we know our stuff, and sometimes it works out like with SunShine.


Hey, Android is about open source!

    The base Android OS is open sourced, however the vast majority of apps, OEM modifications, bootloaders, radios etc etc are not, just like SunShine is not. We strive to achieve full license compliance with any software we use, if you think we are violating any license let us know, we will fix it!


Where can we get support?

    You can find jcase and beaups on #sunshine-support on the freenode irc network (irc.freenode.org, Freenode Webchat). While support may come from others participating, official support will only come from jcase or beaups.


Does SunShine void my warranty?

    In most cases yes, depending on your local laws and the ODM of the device. Unlike HTC, Motorola devices can not be reverted.


Forget you, I'm going to pirate SunShine!

    We highly advise against this, for the safety of your device. Pirated copies of SunShine are most likely nothing more than malware, or worse an actual attempt to crack SunShine, which may lead to real physical damage to your device over time. We can not, and will not be responsible for the results of running "cracked" copies of SunShine. We are not kidding about the chance of damage from pirated copies. Trust us please don't try.
